About the Webinar


AI tools are rapidly entering editorial workflows, promising faster review for journals facing rising submissions and reviewer fatigue. But speed only matters if decisions remain scientifically sound, transparent and ethically defensible. As part of Peer Review Week 2026, the African Journal of Bioethics (AJB) and the Africa Bioethics Network (ABN) convened editors, reviewers and research managers to ask whether AI can help fast-track review while holding scientific rigour and ethics.

 


What Was Discussed


The panel examined where AI can responsibly support editorial and review work, where human judgement remains non-negotiable, and what safeguards journals, particularly in African contexts, need around confidentiality, bias, disclosure and accountability.

Building Excellence in Peer Review: African Perspectives in Global Scholarship
A Peer Reviewer Training | AJB & ABN

About the Training


African researchers remain underrepresented in global peer review, so research from African contexts is often evaluated without the contextual understanding it needs. To help close this gap, the Africa Bioethics Network (ABN) and the African Journal of Bioethics (AJB) hosted a four-day intensive training under the Peer Review for Equity initiative, equipping early to mid-career African researchers to conduct rigorous, ethical and contextually sensitive manuscript evaluation.

​What Was Covered
 

The training focused on four areas: systematic manuscript evaluation, including detecting flaws in design, methods and results using the AJB reviewer template; research integrity and ethics, including bias recognition and responding to misconduct under COPE guidelines; modern publishing practices such as preprints, open data and reporting guidelines; and writing constructive reviewer feedback that supports sound editorial decisions.

Participants


Admission was selective and free of charge, open to researchers in bioethics, public health, medical humanities and ethics-focused clinical research, with priority for current AJB reviewers. 40 participants from 14 countries completed the training and received a Certificate of Completion.

The training strengthened AJB's reviewer pool and laid the groundwork for the AJB Scholarly Publishing & Peer Review Academy. Researchers interested in future cohorts or joining the AJB reviewer pool can learn more here:

The African Journal of Bioethics (AJB) was initially published under the BCA-WA-ETHICS II initiative, funded by the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) and hosted at the University of Zaragoza, Spain, until August 2023. From September 2023, the journal has been hosted and published by the Africa Bioethics Network (ABN), headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. This transition reflects the conclusion of the BCA-WA-ETHICS II initiative and the transfer of publication responsibilities to ABN.
